Advice on a lens and on some photos

Hi Everyone,
I have a couple of trips coming up in the summer, and I'm wondering what you guys use as their go-to travel lens. I have the kit lens that came with my SLR - the 18 - 55 f/3.5-5.6 but its pretty slow, and I'd like to upgrade it. Any recommendations? I do have the 50/1.8 as Wesley recommended, but I'd like one that would work for landscapes as well for sightseeing.

I was thinking about this one:

but its a pretty big jump, and it seems to be a bit heavy to carry around while walking or biking around a city all day. Any suggestions?

Also, I took some more Lacrosse photos this weekend, and the parents are now all asking for copies.. Here is the link to the photos in case anyone is interested. I'm thinking about using some of these and others to form my final portfolio, and I would love any critique/advice. My favorites are the ones where the kids are jumping.

See you guys in class on Thursday.

  1. pics are great, i like how everything's frozen to the punch. about the lens, the canon is an awesome lens, but i beleive its a little overpriced. check out the sigma. its a very good lens. i've used it many times, a friend has it on his nikon almost bought myself a few weeks ago but went for the 35mm fixed.

  2. My parents bought me this lens years ago when I went on Safari in South Africa- It takes amazing pictures - good for sightseeing, not heavy, i still bring my regular lens for shots that are close up - not sure about the compatibility w/ the canon & i haven't really shot with it since taking class at ICP yet- so not sure if i'll notice any limitations now that i didn't before

  3. Also- I like the jumping or mid-run shots also - and some of the ones w/ the Net in the shot - and the one towards the end where your brother (i think) is defending against the 2 other players and you can see the intensity in his face - i didn't love the ones w/ the ref in the background- i prefer just seeing the players
