Lei's Portrait project

This is what the class selected last week. My model, Jeremy, agreed in general, but he is disappointed none of the ones he had sunglasses on was chosen. He thinks he looks really pimp in those shades...

Wrigley Field 6/21/10

I went to Chicago this past weekend and took in a Cubs game. Wrigley Field is amazing -- old time ball park that all the new ball fields try to emulate. I had my camera and documented the vendors hawking food and beverages (ok, beer and hot dogs) at the game. Here you go...

Puerto Rican Day Parade 2010

last sunday i had a small gig for remezcla.com, a latino culture website, covering nightlife and cultural events in the US.  I have to say it was my first time in the parade, and it was a very good experience as a puertorrican and a photographer.  it helped me conquer the fear of approaching strangers and asking for their picture, although you have to understand that if you dress that way, you'd want your picture taken, i think.  i will upload the complete series with more images and maybe a little story, like a possible arrest...

hope you like them.

CNN's Gulf Coast Oil Disaster Photos

Not sure if anyone has seen these pictures on cnn.com covering the oil disaster. Some interesting and devastating photos(especially of the oil soaked pelican). The other picture reminds me of our homework from a few weeks ago.

And everyone did an amazing job on their portraits last week! See you in class.

Portrait Projects

I woke up today thinking about our critique last night. I was very impressed with the level of work on the walls. Needless to say the prints were technically great, but the images where well crafted in the camera as well as strong in content.
Would everyone post their two best portraits on the Blog?
Have a good weekend!!!!

Interesting Photographer

I've been meaning to put up this post for almost two weeks now....
Memorial Weekend I was in Austin at a festival and I met this photographer named Greg Davis. I really liked his work (travel photography), but mostly was inspired by his story of how he came to be a photographer... almost completely by chance. I actually bought one of his signed prints, bc I liked him so much (and hope it's worth something one day :)
Visit his site www.gregdavisphotography.com and click on "Greg's story".

Advice on a lens and on some photos

Hi Everyone,
I have a couple of trips coming up in the summer, and I'm wondering what you guys use as their go-to travel lens. I have the kit lens that came with my SLR - the 18 - 55 f/3.5-5.6 but its pretty slow, and I'd like to upgrade it. Any recommendations? I do have the 50/1.8 as Wesley recommended, but I'd like one that would work for landscapes as well for sightseeing.

I was thinking about this one:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/264304-USA/Canon_8014A002_Zoom_Wide_Angle_Telephoto_EF.html

but its a pretty big jump, and it seems to be a bit heavy to carry around while walking or biking around a city all day. Any suggestions?

Also, I took some more Lacrosse photos this weekend, and the parents are now all asking for copies.. Here is the link to the photos in case anyone is interested. I'm thinking about using some of these and others to form my final portfolio, and I would love any critique/advice. My favorites are the ones where the kids are jumping.

See you guys in class on Thursday.

my last week's homework

Back to the land of burgers and weak beers.

Elements of discussion

Hi
remember we had a conversation about paying or not people for taking their pictures.

I was in Chicago this WE (amazing city by the way) and i saw the work of Philip-Lorca diCorcia nammed Hustlers. I think he has an interesting point of view.

the pictures are here : http://www.vam.ac.uk/collections/photography/past_exhns/twilight/diCorcia/index.html

an interview of him : http://www.americansuburbx.com/2009/04/interview-philip-lorca-dicorcia-on.html

these pictures are great, especially the light and composition. Wes, can you learn us how to do that ?

Have a good day
