In Seville, in search of a barber

Hola from Andalucia! Finally have a hotel that has wireless. Back to Civilization now.
Wesley, I promise I will do my homework of color assignment before Thursday. Been busy taking photos, not much time to sit down and do works.
This one was from yesterday's trip to Cordoba's Mezquita. What you cannot see is 3 security officer from the church right at my back "politely" pushing me out as I was one of the last visitor that morning.

Clip lights

Hey guys, last class a few people were asking me about the clip lights that I bought from home depot and used for my portrait assignment. Here is a picture of what they look like, I bought 2 lights and the bulbs are around 100 watts I think. I bought the bulbs that were closest to daylight and they have a section that gives you a guide to what kind of light a bulb will provide.
Hope this helps out, I have really enjoyed using these lights so far and have been taking more shots using them today!
Have a great weekend...

Portrait Assignment

Here are the others....

Portrait Assignment

Hey, so tomorrow I plan on taking some more photos of my sister for the portrait assignment, but would love to get some of your feedback on what I did last week. I'm not feeling super confident that I know how to properly light her, and I was wondering if the approach I took last week is distracting? When I print do you think all of the intentional highlights I put on her face will look too stark?

Back Up!

I had a mini heart attack monday night when I returned from being away for the weekend and went to work on my assignment for the week & realized my hard drive was not in my camera bag. I tore apart my apartment could not find it- and had to go to bed hoping it would turn up the next day - trying not to think about the fact that I may have lost all my work from when I started in Digital 1. I had every intention of buying a 2nd hard drive to use as a back up, since I didn't want to use up all my memory on my laptop- but never got around do it.
Luckily, it was at ICP - Crisis Averted. Needless to say I immediately backed up the drive onto my laptop & my 2nd hard drive is in the mail...

NY Photo Festival

This morning, I noticed on Daily Candy that there is something called the NY Photo Festival going on right now in Brooklyn. You all may already know about this, but I thought I would share it anyway:

On intrusion of private moments

I went to my very first baby shower over the weekend and also brought my camera with me, thinking I can try to capture a range of emotions of my friend who is pumped up with hormone, as she opens gifts from family and friends. When the moment came, as she unfolded item after item of beautifully preserved baby clothes of her own, saved lovingly by her mother over the past 30 years, all carefully ironed and wrapped with tissue paper, I saw the tenderest expressions on the mother and daughter in all those years I knew them. And I couldn't bring myself to click the shutter of my camera and ruin the moment (at least this is my excuse for not being able to turn in a single good photo from this occasion).

Is it necessary for photographers to keep an emotional distance from the subject?

Going to the Dogs...

If you are looking for more devoted dog owners, here's an article on people who treat their dogs like children, putting them in activities like doggie dance classes, doggie swim classes, doggie Frisbee league...

When to use your camera?

I was at a military promotion party last night for a friend's (really, more of a friend of a friend's) advancement to the rank of Brigadier General. I brought my camera thinking it would be a good opportunity to document a rare experience (at least for me). The room was packed with the full range of social strata of military life. It was perfect for a series of intimate photographs / portraits of people in celebration of something momentous. As I moved about the historic house on Fort Hamilton at the base of the Verranzano Bridge, conversation followed the usual norm with basic party chatter; however, it also veered toward pending transfers, the effort required to move families, uncertainty of long term planning and difficulty of building a life in specific place that could change with short notice, very little of actual war. In the faces of those attending I saw all kinds of human emotion: elation, jealousy, fear, happiness, envy, sadness. Throughout the evening I was surprised at the feeling of an overriding sense of community, not based in a physical setting but one based on something larger - shared purpose, duty, family.

I couldn't bring myself to use my camera. It seemed like an intrusion, especially as an outsider to military life. I feel like a photographic opportunity was lost, yet attempting to think like a photographer added a level of intensity that made the experience incredibly enjoyable.

Creepy doll

I'm looking for a dirty, creepy-looking baby doll (for a photo series idea I have, so stop yer giggling). Anyone have any thoughts on where I might find one?

Moment in Time

Last week, the NYT photo blog "Lens" asked readers to contribute photographs taken at 11:00 EST on Sunday, May 2. I contributed a shot of traveling north on Third Avenue in the 30's.
